Inatlantic was established for the export of coal to European countries. But in its first 5 years it imported spare parts and heavy machinery for engineering projects.

On 18 December, 1990, Inatlantic carried out its first export of coking coal through the maritime terminal of Buenaventura to the port of Cochan in Peru. This export was authorised according to the CARMA DIFRA communication # 07266, issued by the then National Navy Commander Gustavo Ángel Mejía, with a total load of 28,000 tons of coking coal, where the exporter was the Ssmcoal Colombia S.A. company, now called Interamerican Coal Colombia S.A.
